The office will collaborate with industry and academia to advance the country’s AI strategy

As one of its final official acts before leaving office, the Trump Administration is establishing the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Office (NAIIO).

Launched by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), the new agency is charged with overseeing and implementing the United States national AI strategy.

It will serve as "the central hub for Federal coordination and collaboration in AI research and policymaking across the government, as well as with private sector, academia, and other stakeholders.”

Legacy

Over the past four years, the White House created a number of initiatives aimed at advancing AI in the US. The government forged new international AI alliances, issued guidance on federal use of AI, and proposed a national AI strategy that doubled investment in R&D in the 2021 budget.

It also launched a network of national AI research institutes, which focus on a range of promising research areas including machine learning, synthetic manufacturing, precision agriculture, and extreme weather prediction.

The AI budget rollup of federal AI investments as part of the American AI Initiative was made permanent so that the balance of AI funding would be sufficient for the goals of the National AI Initiative Office.

To make matters official, the White House introduced the NAIIO seal, which features the American Bald Eagle, interconnected nodes symbolizing a neural network, and seven stars representing the founding of the Office in the seventh decade of the field of AI, beginning with the seminal 1956 Dartmouth AI workshop.
