Claims workloads are running “three to four times faster” after moving from public cloud to hybrid infrastructure

AI-based diagnostic software specialist PathAI has signed up for Digital Realty’s data center service, PlatformDIGITAL, to support machine learning (ML) workloads assisting in its healthcare research.

The service runs across 280 data centers, located in 47 metropolitan areas on all six continents.

According to DR, it connects to more than 700 network and content providers, 600 cloud and IT service providers, and 800 enterprises.

Having secured $90 million in funding since being founded in 2016, PathAI previously took a cloud-first approach, but with heavy and variable workloads, it required some infrastructure on-premises, with the option of scaling up into the cloud.

CTO Chris Sharp said Digital Realty’s relationships with key IT providers and partnerships in the data center supply chain allow AI companies “to swiftly take advantage of hybrid cloud models.”

Came for the savings, stayed for the capacity

Boston-based PathAI will use hybrid IT infrastructure to run machine learning and deep learning workloads that are relied on by pathologists for disease detection and treatment.

PathAI’s vice president of engineering, Don O’Neill, explained that while the decision to work with Digital Realty was initially motivated by price and flexibility – as it allows for low upfront costs – it was scalability, as well as capacity to manage heavy workloads that has proven to be its biggest advantage.

“Since deploying on PlatformDIGITAL, our complicated workloads are running three to four times faster in a hybrid data center environment than purely in the cloud – a critical differentiator that significantly improved the productivity of our machine learning engineers,” O’Neill said.
